House Cleaning: Don’t Get into Bad Habits

by Nathan Ripley - November 9, 2016

We all know that it’s easy to get into bad habits. You get home tired from work and the first thing you want to do is relax. You throw your clothes on the floor, leave the washing up till later and simply let it all go. Before you know it the house looks like a bomb site.

The only trouble is you know you’re going to have to clean that mess up sooner or later.

Keeping on top of your household cleaning can actually save you time and be less aggravating in the long run. It seems cleaning little and often is a good way to stay out of bad habits.

Put Those Clothes in Their Rightful Place

It might seem okay to throw your clothes on the floor. It’s far better, however, to put them in the laundry basket. If you don’t have one, buy one, it’s the best way to keep all your dirty washing, and everyone else’s, in one place.

Then, all you need to do is swipe it up and put it in the washing machine. It saves you bending down and searching for things when you tidy up your bedroom floor and the kid’s rooms. Add some house rules such as putting shoes in the appropriate place and you’ll probably save yourself the problem of tripping over them in the dark too.

Reduce Your Cooking Pots

If you are a budding culinary genius, you probably use far too many pots. You can significantly reduce your washing up by keeping your pots, pans and other utensils to a minimum. When you see a small number of pots, you are more likely to clean them rather than leave them for later because the job just seems to be too big and you’re too tired.

Having a Clean Out

We all accumulate stuff over the years. Whether it’s old kids’ toys, clothes we no longer need or books and magazines that we’ve finished with. Strangely enough, the less things you have lying around the tidier your house will stay. If you’ve got into the bad habit of putting things on the side and forgetting about them, it’s time to organise a good clean out. Decluttering can be very cathartic and leave you feeling more in control. You can send all your old things for recycling or collect toys and clothes for the local charity shop.

Coping with Kids and Pets

They are often the messiest ones in the household so setting ground rules is important if you want to keep a clean house. You can start training your kids pretty early on to clean up their toys and do the washing up. The sooner you begin the more it will become part of their daily routine.

Pets are a different matter and can leave hair and other little treats for you all over the place. If you have animals, you probably find that you have to vacuum and clean a lot more regularly and this can be quite a chore if you also have a busy work life. Hair is the biggest problem and leaving it for too long can mean it gets ingrained in your carpet and will make the place smell. Try to stay on top of hoovering with one big clean at least once a week.

Keeping a clean home is important. Dirty carpets and dusty surfaces can cause all sorts of allergies, especially if you have kids. Staying on top of the washing and being more organised can ensure that you aren’t faced with a big clean up at the weekend when you simply want to relax and have fun with the family.
